How to make the frosting

To assemble these cupcakes, you will first need to bake the cupcakes and let them cool completely. You don’t want to frost warm cupcakes and risk all the frosting falling off!

Once cooled, it’s time for the fun part — frosting your cupcakes! You can choose whatever frosting tip you prefer to create a beautiful and swirly design. Or, you can simply spread it on the top with a butter knife if you don’t want to pipe.

Just make sure you have enough frosting as a base to hold up your cake topper!

How to make the brownie topper

Next, you’ll need to decorate your book of spells topper. Just add an edible eye and carefully pipe on the black frosting in whatever design you’d like!

This is a great step to complete while your cupcakes are cooling.

After you’ve decorated the brownies, carefully place one on top of each frosted cupcake. Be sure to press them down into the frosting since it acts as the glue that holds the topper in place.

Tips for making these Hocus Pocus Cupcakes

If you want to make these witchy cupcakes, here are a few tips to help you make amazingly magical Halloween treats!

  • Be careful not to overmix the cupcake batter. Overmixing will result in the cupcakes not rising as much, and you want nicely domed cupcakes to frost.
  • Make sure your frosting is at room temperature when you frost the cupcakes. If it is too cold it won’t go on smoothly and risk tearing up the top of the cupcakes. If it is too warm it won’t be firm enough.
  • You can always use a different kind of frosting if you prefer. Homemade and store-bought will both work in this recipe.
  • If you are making these Hocus Pocus cupcakes with your children, consider decorating the toppers yourself. They are a bit more detailed and require a finer hand.
  • These cupcakes are best served at room temperature but can be stored in the fridge for a few hours if necessary. Take them out an hour before serving.
  • If your cake topper won’t stay in place, you can secure it with a toothpick. Just make sure to warn anyone that eats them about the toothpick!
