Tips and ingredient substitutions

If you are going to make this recipe, you may want to know some of these helpful tips that you can follow to create these amazingly monstrous sloppy joes!

  • When cooking these joes, if you have the time, you can sneak in some extra veggies by dicing celery and carrots and cooking them with the onion.
  • If this recipe is not flavorful enough for you, add a few tablespoons of brown sugar or some ketchup.
  • For a slightly spicy sloppy joe, try adding some salsa or some hot sauce to the mix.
  • If your family likes sour things, you can add a few slices of pickles to each burger for extra flavor.
  • For a healthier dish, drain the oil from the ground beef after cooking to remove all of that extra fat.
  • If your sloppy joe mix seems to be too runny, make a simple slurry of cornstarch and water and cook it with the joe mix until it thickens. One tablespoon should be more than enough cornstarch to thicken up a runny joe mix.
  • If you don’t want to use Manwich, you can make your own! A combination of tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, and spices will make a very realistic substitute.
